Chaos;Head ep 1

I’ve been writing quite a bit about anime lately, but there’s just so many good series airing this season. I watched Chaos Head last night and it could potentially be one of the best anime this year. According to wikipedia, Chaos Head was originally a PC game that they made into an anime. Here’s the plotline from wikipedia:

Chaos;Head’s story is set in the year of 2008 in Shibuya and is centered around Takumi Nishijō, a high school student at the private Suimei Academy, and some strange events that have occurred recently in the Shibuya area. Two events have occurred so far and is being referenced by the media and the public at large as being New Generation (ニュージェネレーション?) events. The first event named “Group Dive” (集団ダイブ?) occurred on September 7th with five high school students jumping to their deaths off of a high tower. The second event named “Pregnant Man” (妊娠男 Ninshin Otoko?) happened on September 19th wherein a male university student was found dead with a thirty-two week old fetus incised within his abdomen.

The story begins on September 28 with Takumi talking to an online friend named Grim (グリム Gurimu?). Grim is trying to bring Takumi up to speed about the recent New Generation events since Takumi is not interested local or international news. A person named Shōgun (将軍?) joins the chat room midway through Grim and Takumi’s conversation but he does not respond despite being greeted by both Grim and Takumi. Grim sends Takumi a poorly drawn image of a person getting stabbed with several stakes. Grim claims that it is an image of the victim before leaving.

After Grim leaves the chat room, Shōgun finally starts to talk. He sends Takumi a barrage of several image links depicting a murder like Grim’s image except that these images appeared to be real images. The next day, as Takumi was heading home after spending the afternoon at an Internet cafe, he comes across the same scene that he witnessed yesterday in Shōgun’s pictures. He sees a male body nailed to the wall as well as a pink-haired girl dressed in Suimei Academy’s uniform covered in blood. Takumi runs away screaming as soon as he comes to his senses over the situation at hand. The story progresses from here with Takumi trying to avoid getting involved with Shōgun and other New Generation events as he is slowly caught in a grander scheme’s wheels of motion.

Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni was the only other psychological thriller I’ve ever seen and I really liked it so I hope Chaos Head will be just as good. One of the similarities between Chaos Head and Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni is that they show events from the characters’ perspective. In the first episode, we see Takumi conversing with a girl in his room, who turns out to be his favourite anime character. I believe the only purpose in showing that is to tell the audience that Takumi is delusional and that anything shown through his perspective may or may not be true.

With that being said, I wonder if Takumi really did witness a guy nailed to a wall and a pink-haired girl covered in blood. He had already seen the murder scene on his computer before seeing it with his eyes so he may have just been imagining things. The pink-haired girl also happens to be in his class at school, meaning he’s at least seen her before even though he doesn’t recognize her. Another possibility is that Takumi is actually the murderer. He could’ve seen the images of a murder scene online and repeated it in real life, then imagined that he was a witness. It’s hard to tell right now whether Takumi was a witness to a crime or whether he committed it, but I assume the stake that he took from the crime scene will help reveal the answer. Of course, I’ve never played the Chaos Head game so my predictions could be completely off.

Another thing I liked about this episode was this little hint I saw during my second viewing. When Takumi was leaving the internet cafe, he passed a room with the door half-open. On the computer screen was info about the New Generation murders. He didn’t see who was inside the room, but he did see a bag with 3 frog cellphone straps on it. Later in the episode, we see that the girl thats been following Takumi (I think her name was Yua) has the same bag with the 3 frogs on it. That makes me wonder what she was doing looking up info on New Generation and why she’s trying to get close to Takumi. Maybe she really does have a crush on Takumi like she said, or maybe she’s looking for more information on New Generation and thinks Takumi may have them. Once again, I could be completely off with this.

Takumi's first encounter with Yua. See the frogs?

I really like shows like Chaos Head that have delusional main characters. The fact that sometimes they show events through those characters’ eyes makes it even better because you can never tell fantasy from reality and the unpredictability factor just shoots way up. Chaos Head has a lot of potential and I hope it turns out to be a good anime.

To finish off, here are just some screenshots:
